Online Safety

At Bearwood Primary School, online safety is a key priority. We are committed to helping children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully. As digital technology plays an increasingly important role in everyday life, we work closely with pupils, staff and families to promote positive online behaviours and to help children understand how to stay safe when using the internet, social media, online games and digital devices.

Online safety is taught throughout the curriculum and reinforced through assemblies, themed events and classroom discussions. Pupils learn about protecting personal information, managing their digital footprint, recognising online risks, reporting concerns and treating others with kindness and respect when communicating online. We encourage children to become critical thinkers who can make informed choices when navigating the digital world.

Within our Computing curriculum, online safety  is taught through age-appropriate lessons, using Project Evolve. Children learn how technology works, how to use digital tools safely and responsibly, and how to identify and respond to potential online dangers. Topics include privacy and security, cyberbullying, online relationships, reliable sources of information and understanding the impact of their online actions.

Online safety is also an important part of our Jigsaw PSHE programme. Through Jigsaw, pupils explore themes such as relationships, communication, personal wellbeing, respect and responsibility, all of which support safe online behaviour. Children are taught how to build positive relationships online, manage peer pressure, seek help when needed and understand the emotional and social aspects of life in a connected world. This joined-up approach helps ensure that pupils are equipped to stay safe, healthy and happy both online and offline.

We also support parents and carers through sharing ‘Wake Up Wednesdays’. These online safety guides provide up-to-date information about popular apps, games, websites and online trends that children may be using. The guides highlight potential risks, explain key safety features and offer practical advice to help families start conversations about staying safe online. By sharing Wake Up Wednesday resources regularly, we aim to strengthen the partnership between home and school and ensure that parents and carers feel informed and confident in supporting their children's digital lives.
